The response was dismissive and filled with excuses instead of accountability. What made this even worse was the follow-up interaction. The very next week, I saw this same manager again in Madison after we ultimately still chose to purchase a different vehicle from the dealership. Instead of acting professionally, he avoided us entirely—wouldn’t greet us, wouldn’t shake hands, and wouldn’t acknowledge us as customers. At one point, he walked past me, shook his head, gave a visible look of disapproval, and then went behind the desk without saying a word. This was after we had already completed a purchase. That behavior is not just unprofessional—it’s unacceptable in any customer-facing role, especially in sales leadership. To be clear: we were told the original vehicle had no business being sold in its condition, yet it was still presented as “certified.” That disconnect alone should raise concerns for anyone considering doing business here. If there’s feedback for the management team: Own the situation. Acknowledge mistakes. Treat customers with basic respect—even when conversations are uncomfortable. This experience left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.

Transparency, professionalism, respect and trust equals
Transparency, professionalism, respect and trust equals more than a transaction. It translated into trusted advisor. We unsuccessfully shopped across several states from the DC metro area through Wisconsin and even northern Illinois. One Va dealer told us advertised prices were “ only to get you in the door and not real”. A relationship with Michael and Russ Darrow Kia with a phone call, though brief that phone call established the confidence that we could expect trustworthy people who would treat us with respect transparency and become more than just a single transaction with someone we could begin to count on for a longer term repeat business. We were able to identify a vehicle make an appointment and it was ready waiting for us when we flew in. So far the experience has been one of our better automotive buying experiences ever. They were fair and they were nice I will strongly recommend Michael and Russ Darrow Kia

Our experience with Caleb today was amazing.
Our experience with Caleb today was amazing. He was polite and friendly and knowledgeable about the cars. We were a little apprehensive with the idea that he was in the backseat when we took the car for a test drive but at the end of the day even that turned out to be a good experience because he did not complain about my driving just because I like to drive maybe a little bit fast but only a little bit but always within the law of course haha lol. When we got back into his office we looked at one other vehicle we weren't really as impressed and it was a little bit older. Caleb then said okay guys so which one are you taking today and he laughed and smiled and we said you know what my wife and I want to talk about this you go in and we'll come in in 5 minutes after we talk. He laughed and smiled and said if you don't take this one you're going to take the other one right and he laughed he's like because that wasn't to know. We ultimately did go ahead and buy it. Once again the entire process from Caleb was great. Now they did bring in a salesperson a sales manager to go over warranty and to go over some extra add-on that was $1,000 to to spray the body and weather protected and all this kind of stuff. We opted out of that because we didn't want any of that I would rather have a good extended warranty. But Caleb knew about the warranties just like he knew everything about the cars. The nice thing is is that every time the sales manager got up and left we were stuck there waiting and waiting and waiting. I made it very clear to everybody that I was becoming impatient because this process was really quite slow. Caleb much to my surprise he recognized my frustration and so he hung with me and made small talk with me for almost an hour while we waited for all the paperwork to be done by the dealership and all the rest. A lot of sales guys would have just said thank you very much turned me over to the next guy and then off they go. But not Caleb instead he was very entertaining and he had a lot to say and we had a great conversation while we waited. At the end of the day I would recommend anybody to Caleb he was a great sales guy. And you should see his work ethic this poor kid is putting in 12 hour days 6 days a week because he's competitive and he really wants to make a name for himself. But you can tell that he's using his time wisely because he understands the features of these cars he knows one car from the other and what they have and what they don't and how to use them and how to turn stuff on and turn stuff off he literally answered every question I had. So I was pleasantly surprised there because he made it effortless for us. So one more thing for Caleb kudos to him he got us up from 14 Grand to almost 21 Grand and I can't say that very many salespeople would be able to do that. This is a young kid who's trying to make a name for himself he's a hard worker and I would recommend him to anybody. Feedback for the dealership you just have to find a way to speed up the process. When a customer agrees to buy something you just cannot make them wait an hour or an hour and a half before they get the keys to drive home. You have got to get them in and out that door in under a half an hour. I really don't care how busy you are although you didn't appear to be that busy today but I don't care how busy you are that's why you have more than one sales manager. So get your customers in take them for a ride show them the vehicles help them understand why they need the vehicles make the sale and get them out of there with smiles on their faces but man when you start talking about 90 minutes or 2 hours you know what people are getting frustrated they're watching their watches they want to go home they're seeing it getting darker you get my drift. All right so Russ Darrow streamline your process Caleb you keep working and I'll refer anybody to you in a heartbeat thank you for what you did although I am still mad that I spent $10,000 more

Steve is incredibly knowledgeable and kind, down-to-earth and patient. He worked with me on trading in my old car for a new one and it was fate how it all came together! When I first came into Russ Darrow Kia for service on my old vehicle, Steve was the first person to introduce himself to me and made me feel very confident in how he can help if I want to get rid of my old vehicle. Well, two months later I was back with more issues (unrelated to the initial problem they resolved) and Steve was highly recommended by the service manager Joe (who is also incredible) to work with him. Steve handled my situation with care and transparency, and I wasn't in the best situation financially, but Steve informed me not to worry that his manager can make the impossible possible and so they have! I traded in my old beat up 2017 kia and drove off in a new 2022 Kia GT with little money down and their unwavering support. I highly recommend working with Steve when you come to Russ Darrow Kia. He's smart, humble, and really loves what he does and is honest but he doesn't quit and because of that I was able to finally have a safe car to drive moving forward.

Steve Young was our salesperson.
Steve Young was our salesperson. He was incredibly knowledgeable and well-informed about all the various features of the vehicles, including how different trim levels varied with their features, etc. He was helpful without being pushy, incredibly patient with us (we had brought our kids along, too... didn't seem to bother him at all!) as we figured out what would be the best vehicle for our family. If you want great service, you should ask for Steve!

We stopped at Russ Darrow to look at a Kia Sorento
We stopped at Russ Darrow to look at a Kia Sorento Prestige. Lorenzo met us in the lot and gave us information about the vehicle we were looking at. He was friendly, informative and very patient with our questions. He let us take it for a ride and we were impressed with his knowledge and with the vehicle. We made arrangements with him to be back 2 days later to review and possibly purchase the vehicle. Again, Lorenzo was friendly, informative and very patient with us and we did trade in and purchase a new Kia. We really like the vehicle. We highly recommend Russ Darrow and ask for Lorenzo if you are in the market for a vehicle.

Russ Darrow is trying to charge $10,000 over MSRP now to any customer buying from them. We need to put a stop to this predatory practice. I would also say, this is incredibly short-sighted on the part of a business. They could earn a customer for life or try to take advantage of us for a day. They chose to try to take advantage. My guess is that Russ Darrow won't be in Madison much longer.

We traded in our 2015 Kia Optima and the sale person said what is wrong with it, which was only the small damage to the plastic. However I should have asked what is wrong with the vehicle we ended up buying because we have had problems with it. No happy!

I want to specifically call out the sales manager
I want to specifically call out the sales manager involved in our experience, because the lack of professionalism was just as concerning as the condition of the vehicle. After driving over 2 hours to see a “Certified” vehicle that was in unacceptable condition, not once did the manager apologize for the situation or acknowledge the time we wasted based on how the car was represented. The response was dismissive and filled with excuses instead of accountability. What made this even worse was the follow-up interaction. The very next week, I saw this same manager again in Madison after we ultimately still chose to purchase a different vehicle from the dealership. Instead of acting professionally, he avoided us entirely—wouldn’t greet us, wouldn’t shake hands, and wouldn’t acknowledge us as customers. At one point, he walked past me, shook his head, gave a visible look of disapproval, and then went behind the desk without saying a word. This was after we had already completed a purchase. That behavior is not just unprofessional—it’s unacceptable in any customer-facing role, especially in sales leadership. To be clear: we were told the original vehicle had no business being sold in its condition, yet it was still presented as “certified.” That disconnect alone should raise concerns for anyone considering doing business here. If there’s feedback for the management team: Own the situation. Acknowledge mistakes. Treat customers with basic respect—even when conversations are uncomfortable. This experience left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.

We did end up going over our price range which was not ideal, and we did end not know this until we had gotten to the financial person. It would have been good to know the cost sooner. We still bought it so it worked out. We did end up noticing a potential issue with the car after getting it off the lot.
